Bad breath is a common complaint during fasting. This condition not only disrupts comfort but can also lower self confidence and trigger social issues.

The Chairperson of the Health Unit at IPB University, drg Titik Nurhayati, explained that bad breath during fasting is generally caused by reduced saliva production in the oral cavity.

“Bad breath is a common issue that can occur at any age. The causes vary, ranging from dental and oral health problems to digestive issues such as acid reflux,” said drg Titik in the IPB Pedia program broadcast on IPB TV’s YouTube channel.

She explained that during fasting, the body does not receive food and drink intake for an extended period. This condition causes the mouth to become dry because there is no chewing process to stimulate saliva production. In fact, saliva functions as a natural antiseptic that helps suppress the growth of bacteria that cause bad breath.

“When saliva production decreases, bacteria in the mouth can multiply more easily and eventually cause bad breath,” she explained.

To prevent this condition, drg Titik advises the public to maintain oral and dental hygiene during fasting. She emphasized the importance of brushing teeth regularly at least twice a day, especially after the pre-dawn meal and before going to bed.

“In addition to brushing, using mouthwash is also recommended because brushing alone may not clean the entire oral cavity. Food debris can remain between the teeth and needs to be cleaned with dental floss,” she said.

She also reminded people not to neglect tongue hygiene. According to her, the tongue can become a place where food residue sticks, potentially causing unpleasant odors.

In addition, adequate water intake is very important. “Try to drink about 1,5 to 2 liters of mineral water between breaking the fast and the pre-dawn meal so the mouth does not become too dry,” said drg Titik.

Other tips she shared include avoiding strongly scented foods, increasing vegetable and fruit consumption, and reducing foods and drinks high in sugar. By consistently maintaining a healthy diet and good oral hygiene, bad breath during fasting can be prevented, allowing worship to be carried out more comfortably. (Fj)
