Amid the growing trend of coffee that offers instant “alertness” but often triggers anxiety, a group of students from the IPB University Business School presents an alternative approach.
Through the brand VETA, they introduce a beverage made from butterfly pea flowers, specifically designed as a stress reliever for workers and students with high mobility.
“VETA was developed under the Student Entrepreneurship Program (PMW) 2026 as a response to the high consumption of sugary and caffeinated drinks in Indonesia,” said Cantik Zahra Firdaus, a student of the IPB University Business School and the team leader.
Unlike conventional herbal drinks, VETA packages the benefits of butterfly pea flowers in an attractive appearance and a mild taste, making it a functional yet “trendy” beverage.
The team chose butterfly pea flowers due to their flavonoid and alkaloid content, which can provide a relaxing effect and help improve focus. To ensure nutritional quality, the team applies carefully controlled production techniques, from maintaining extraction temperatures at 70–80°C to using packaging that minimizes light exposure.
“Our main target is wellness seekers. VETA is designed for those who want to unwind after busy activities without experiencing anxiety like when consuming coffee. We use stevia to maximize health benefits and ensure it is safe for daily consumption,” Cantika Zahra Firdaus explained.
One of VETA’s unique features is its natural color change when lime is added, which also helps maintain antioxidant stability. Although the biggest challenge currently lies in public education, as butterfly pea flowers are still often perceived merely as ornamental plants, initial market responses have shown strong interest in this aesthetic health drink concept.
“Through PMW, we not only receive financial support but also insights to build a sustainable business foundation. We are currently conducting research and development for new variants based on coconut water to create a fresher taste,” she added.
VETA’s journey toward becoming a functional beverage brand is gaining stronger momentum. By combining the local wisdom of butterfly pea flowers, superfoods such as chia seeds, and natural sweeteners like stevia, VETA is poised to become a pioneer of a calming healthy lifestyle trend in the Indonesian market.
