Jumbo cat breeds are large and charming. These cats are perfect for keeping at home to liven up the atmosphere and make it more enjoyable. Prof Ronny Rachman Noor, an ecological genetics expert at IPB University, recommends five jumbo cat breeds that cat lovers can keep as pets at home.
1. Maine Coon
This cat can grow up to one meter in length. Despite its large size, this cat that is known as a ‘gentle giant’ has a calm and patient temperament and gets along well with both children and dogs. Its fur is prone to matting, so it’s recommended to brush it at least three times a week.
“This cat prefers tall, sturdy scratching posts because of its large body. Smaller posts can tip over and are unsafe. Provide a sufficient amount of protein rich food to keep its muscles strong, but avoid overfeeding to prevent obesity and joint problems,” said Prof Ronny.
2. Savannah
Known as the Mini Tiger, this cat is intelligent and full of energy. Its behavior is somewhat wild, and it loves to jump high, so it’s important to provide interactive toys and daily playtime to prevent it from damaging nearby items. Owning a Savannah cat offers a unique experience, like caring for a tame, curious wild cat.
3. Ragdoll
Ragdoll cats are known for their slender, adorable appearance. When held, their bodies feel soft and soothing, just like a rag doll. These “Sluggish Dolls” are docile, affectionate, and passive, and not very good at avoiding danger.
“A ragdoll cat always brings a warm and pleasant atmosphere, but don’t let them play outside unsupervised because their survival instincts are still weak,” explained Prof Ronny, who has also served as a judge in cat shows.
4. Norwegian Forest
The Norwegian Forest Cat has a thick double coat that makes it look large and majestic. This “Furry Viking” is known for being independent, affectionate toward its family, and fond of climbing, jumping, and playing in high places. This cat is well-suited for homes with cool, well ventilated environments.
“To keep them clean, it’s recommended to brush their fur daily to prevent matting. Since they like to scout from above, provide a comfortable, cool spot where they can stay comfortable during hot weather. With proper care, these cats will be happy and healthy,” said the IPB University professor specializing in genetics and animal breeding.
5. Chausie
The Chausie cat has an athletic build and long legs, similar to a wildcat. It is active, intelligent, and a bit wilder than domestic cats. It forms a strong bond with its owner, though it requires constant stimulation. Its vocalizations sound similar to human speech.
“When caring for this cat, provide plenty of toys and playtime, because without them, he can become stressed. Clicker training is also important because he learns quickly. Choose food high in animal protein to keep him healthy and happy,” explained Prof Ronny. (MHT) (IAAS/KQA)
