Breaking the fast is a crucial moment for replenishing energy and fluids after a day of fasting. However, breaking the fast in the wrong way can actually cause bloating, weakness, and even digestive issues.

Professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition (FKGiz) at IPB University, Ahmad Sulaeman, emphasizes the importance of breaking the fast gradually so the body can readjust properly.

In an episode of IPB Pedia on the IPB TV YouTube channel, Prof Ahmad explained that breaking the fast should begin with warm water and naturally sweet foods like dates.

“Breaking the fast should start with water, followed by naturally sweet foods like dates or fruit. This helps gently awaken the digestive system so the body doesn’t experience a shock,” he said.

According to him, after a full day of fasting, the body experiences a drop in energy and fluid deficiency, so the process of breaking the fast needs to be done in a planned manner and not excessively. Prof Ahmad reminded that many people tend to “overindulge” when breaking the fast by consuming various foods all at once.

“Controlling one’s appetite is important. After restraining ourselves all day, we often want to eat everything. Well, that’s not ideal,” he said. Prof Ahmad explained that the purpose of breaking the fast encompasses five things: following the Sunnah, restoring energy, rehydrating the body, maintaining health, and preventing overeating.

Avoid Ice and Foods That Cause Irritation
Prof Ahmad also advised people to avoid foods that are too spicy or high in saturated fat, as well as cold drinks, when first breaking the fast. According to him, cold temperatures can shock the stomach after it has been empty for a long time.

“Cold water or ice can shock the stomach. In fact, warm drinks are better,” he explained. Prof Ahmad also added that spicy foods carry a risk of causing irritation, especially for individuals with stomach issues.

After the initial phase of breaking the fast, the main meal is recommended to follow the principles of balanced nutrition, consisting of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber on a single plate. This combination helps maintain stable blood sugar levels, restore energy, and prolong the feeling of fullness. (Fj) (IAAS/HLF).
